This rare Taylor 614ce Grand Auditorium not only boasts the tone-enhancing refinements that earned the 614ce two “Guitar of the Year” nods at the 2016 Winter NAMM Show. She also showcases a sleek, exclusive upgrade: a contoured Ebony armrest and the upgraded 2021 version of the ES-2 pickup system.
This Taylor 614ce LTD Special Edition is built with Big Leaf flamed Maple and a torrefied Sitka Spruce top. She produces a rich, warm and complex tone, yet retains a pleasing transparency. Voicing nuances include a back bracing profile that’s customized for Maple. The torrefication process applied to the premium Sitka Spruce top adds an aged tonal character with greater acoustic resonance and responsiveness. Other touches include the use of protein glues to optimize the tonal transfer between key wood components and an ultra-thin, 3.5-mil gloss finish to minimize damping. A hand-rubbed “Brown Sugar” stain on the back and sides gives maple’s striking figure a beautiful violin-hued appearance without adding extra thickness to the finish. Bob Taylor and Andy Powers have invented a new way of using Maple for flat top guitars drawing from the experience of the violin builders who only used Sitka Spruce and Maple for these instruments. Featured appointments include grained ivoroid Wings fretboard inlays, an inlaid Ebony back strap, Ebony binding with ivoroid purfling, an Ebony/grained ivoroid rosette, and a striped ebony pickguard, along with Taylor’s Expression System 2 acoustic electronics. We asked Taylor to do a maintenance job on the guitar. The neck angle was perfected, and a fret dress was done. This makes the playability almost effortless. The Taylor techs also the Expression System to the latest version. This version has a less pronounced mid-rage and a bit of lower output to improve tone and feedback preventing feed. The new pickup also has an increased shielding from 7% in the old ES2 pickups to 13% in this latest version. The new ES2 system also includes the upgraded battery holder to fit the new Taylor Sense Smart Battery Box (not included) for measuring humidity, battery life, impact, and temperature of the guitar.
