The Martin OMJM John Mayer is born over 15 years ago in collaboration with John to create a more affordable second namesake guitar, one with many of the same attributes as the limited edition OM-28JM Limited Edition. This tasteful Orchestra Model exhibits versatility for today’s diverse contemporary musical styles. She comes with vintage appointments like the herringbone binding and vintage toner lacquer. Like her predecessor, the OMJM John Mayer Special Edition features a top of solid Engelmann Spruce with specially designed “hybrid” bracing that enhances the rich, full sound. Engelmann Spruce is very similar to Sitka Spruce, but there are some differences that luthiers with more experience can notice. Generally, Sitka variety has a creamy yellowish color, while Engelmann stands out for its better sound, which imitates the sound which could provide an old instrument.
The neck is the low profile version with a nut width of 1 11/16″ / 43 mm and satin finish. Body appointments are a Style 45 rosette featuring a center ring of colorful Paua (abalone) shell, bold herringbone around the top, grained ivoroid binding throughout and a traditional OM teardrop polished and beveled tortoiseshell pickguard. To enhance the beauty of the wood, a specially formulated vintage “aging” toner is applied, and then the polished nitrocellulose gloss lacquer completes the picture.
