Pristine Martin D-18DC David Crosby Signature. Fabulous strummer, fast pickers, fabulous tone, unique looks. Need we say more?
This Martin D-18DC David Crosby Signature is a beautiful and rare guitar. She was build in 2002 to the personal specs of the legendary and lifetime Martin fan Mr. David Crosby. This is a D-18 and then some! Martin built only 250 of these beauties and this is #158. A seriously different guitar and luxuriously made with David’s Wooden ship inlaid in abalone on the headstock, a straight-grained Engelmann Spruce top, rare Quilted Mahogany back and sides and a Genuine Mahogany neck with modified V profile. Of course, she has David Crosby’s signature in Abalone at the 19th fret. Engelmann Spruce is very similar to Sitka Spruce, but there are some differences that luthiers with more experience can notice. Generally, Sitka variety has a creamy yellowish color, while Engelmann stands out for its better sound, which imitates the sound which could provide an old instrument.
With this signature model Martin is honoring none other than famous guitarist David Crosby. The man’s probably done more to put acoustic-driven, folk-tinged rock on the pop music map than anyone, first with his work in the Byrds, then in Crosby, Stills, and Nash. For this signature guitar Crosby chose to base her on a Martin D-18, the first Martin he owned and one he continued to play up through the early days of Crosby, Stills, and Nash.
This beauty has been played as they should, but it shows that the owner has taken good care of her. Some minor fret wear in the lower regions of the unwound string and very minor scratches on the top. Overall she’s in excellent condition. Perfect neck angle, low action setup and very easy to play. This is one of the most valuable signature models that is also displayed in the Martin Museum. Listen to a sound impression here:
