This 2022 Martin Custom Shop 00-18 Sinker Mahogany – Adirondack Red Spruce features Martin’s 00 grand concert body size, constructed with Hide Glue from all solid tonewoods and nitro finish. Awesome!
This Martin Custom Shop 00-18 is build with pre-war Sinker Mahogany for back and sides, combined with an Adirondack Red Spruce top constructed with Hide Glue. Sinker Mahogany is the genuine Central American Mahogany that Martin used on the pre-war Golden Era instruments. The wood matured slowly in a dimly lit virgin forest. It is denser, darker, more attractive, as well as different sounding than the Mahogany on standard new model instruments. When these trees were cut down, the logs were floated down rivers to the sawmills. Approximately one third of the wood sank during the process. The wood was lost for nearly a century. With the use of sonar and scuba gear, the wood was found and acquired by Martin.
Martin’s build with sinker Mahogany differ most noticeably from the standard Mahogany in how the bottom end stays more in line with the rest of the voice. The fundamental from the low E string is thicker and denser than that of the A and D strings, but remains more compact and defined compared to a 000 or OM. Ideal for players who are looking for a smaller body, but used to Martins like the D-35 and D-28 and will enjoy how this guitar differs in sound. Because the bass stays in line with the other registers, it keeps the voice balanced by centering tonally in the midrange. And it puts the emphasis on the fundamental notes from the strings. Overall she provides the classic, or even more precise, legendary Martin guitar tone. She is resonant, lightweight at 1.65kg and setup with low action for easy playability. This baby is in excellent condition.
