The Martin 00-16 DBFM is a deep-body 00 from the Women & Music series with flamed/pacific big-leaf maple back & sides and a Sitka Spruce top, built in a limited run of ~136 guitars and using Martin’s Hybrid X/A-frame scalloped bracing.
This Martin 00-16 DBFM is rare and seldom shows up for sale and there is a readon for that: hard to let go. Martin rarely builds guitar with a Maple back and sides, let alone a Maple neck! This one has both. Some may thing Maple articulates the high notes but in real word Maple offers a warm tone with plenty of projection. The low end is tight, quick, and punchy. The deep body adds warmth and sustain for a 00, but Maple keeps the bass focused. The mids are clean and open with strong note separation. Every note from a chords is heard uninterupted and so are singel notes. the high notes are chimey and glassy with that with Sitka sweetness. Lots of definition and sparkle without turning brittle when you dig in. The overtones & sustain are more fundamental-driven than rosewood, but the deep body gives a satisfying bloom and longer decay than a standard 00.
The Hybrid X/A-Frame scalloped bracing is Martin’s way of combining a lighter X-brace with A-frame upper bracing to support the mortise-and-tenon neck joint, while still giving the guitar scalloped airiness. Overall this is a clear, airy, and articulate 00 with extra body and headroom. Great for recording and for players who want small-body comfort without sacrificing projection. She handles fingerstyle articulation and light-to-medium flatpicking equally well. And with only 100 guitars built this is a rare and collectable sweetheart too. Her condtion is near MINT.
