The Lowden S50 12-fret Tasmanian Blackwood – Alpine Spruce delivers bass, mids and highs big time considering the small body. No, it does not have the volume of an O or an F-model. But man, this is very good sounding guitar. Strumming, flatpicking, fingerpicking or tapping. She does it all. Tasmanian Blackwood’s tone profile resembles that of Koa in general and Mahogany in its midrange focus. Dry, clear yet also warm — with an added splash of top-end shimmer and richness found in Rosewood. Alpine Spruce dominates the magic of this compact body that is comfortable both sitting down and standing up. This tonewood is unanimously considered the best wood for the soundboards of acoustic instruments.
The S-body shape provides perhaps a more intimate Lowden experience and has a slightly shorter 630 mm scale. Thus, the string tension is slightly lower, which allows for even easier playing (vibrato). The Lowden 12-fret design doesn’t change the scale, but the bridge has been relocated. The soundbox is uniquely voiced to create a guitar that offers sweetness, depth, rounded trebles, impressive projection and a natural tonal balance that lends itself equally well to strumming and fingerpicking. Without sounding in any way lacking in vibrancy or dynamics, there’s an easygoing softness and warmth to this guitar that draws you right in.
