The Gibson ES-175D is the quintessential Jazz-guitar and one of the most recognizable guitar models with her sweet curves and sharp cutaway.
This well-kept 1988 Gibson ES-175D was a two-owner guitar and very well treated during her life. She sparkles in tone and looks. What a beauty. And what a tone. This is a stunning example from the post-Norlin era where Henry Juskiewicz led the company into a new future by focusing on quality of tonewood and build techniques. This ES is built with laminated Honduran Mahogany back & sides and a Big Leaf Maple top. For the fingerboard Madagascar Rosewood was used. Also, the one-piece Honduran Mahogany neck was re-reintroduced in that period. The low output PAF-style Tim Shaw sound bright, sweet, and full of character. They deliver those o so familiar warm, round tones from the neck pickup and a clear, articulate, and punchy tone from the bridge pickup. She is in excellent condition. We had our luthier do a fret job and upgraded the tuners with a nice set of high-quality Kluson-style Grover Vintage Deluxe. This is a very nice example featuring that deep dark Sunburst finish in a very clean shape with minimal signs of use for its age.
The ES-175D has been a staple of Modern and Progressive Jazz with its warm archtop tone, versatile pickup configuration, and excellent feel! With a fully hollow body and sharp Florentine cutaway, the Gibson ES-175D stands out as an all-time iconic jazz guitar. Although the ES-175 is noted as a jazz guitar, it has also been embraced by rock players like Yes’ Steve Howe who has a signature model. Other notable players are Pat Metheny, Joe Pass, Babic Reinhart, and of course Steve Howe. Listen to a nice sound sample of Eric Poitras on a sister model here:
