The Collings Jumbo, or CJ, is Bill’s (RIP) version of the classic slope-shouldered dreadnought, a shape that has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years. While the CJ is similar in width and depth to the traditional dreadnought, it has a distinctly different tone. Of all the Collings body shapes, this is the one most often requested with an optional sunburst top finish, and the wide range of wood options, neck widths, and string scales allow the CJ to be many different guitars to a wide variety of players.
Her voice is alive and immediate. She feels super responsive to pick attack and dynamics. Punchy when you dig in, articulate when you lighten up. The overall vibe is dry, woody, articulate, and powerful — somewhere between a traditional Gibson J-45 and a Martin D-18. Collings’ build style adds clarity and headroom, so the CJ MH has a more refined and hi-fi take on the classic mahogany dreadnought sound. Her condition is near mint.
