This is a stunning Bourgeois Vintage D Varnish in premium Madagascar Rosewood and Adirondack Red Spruce, constructed with hot hide glue by the expert on guitar top voicing.
The Bourgeois Vintage Varnish D replicates the look and sound of the pre-war steel string. Built in Dana’s worship in Lewiston, Maine with an Adirondack Red Spruce top and a magnificent set of Madagascar Rosewood for the back and sides. This guitar is extremely well-built and voiced. No surprise since Dana is the expert on guitar top voicing.
This Bourgeois Vintage Varnish D was built by Dana in 2011 as a showpiece for the 2011 IBMA-Convention for their annual tradeshow/festival in Raleigh, NC. Dana loves to spruce up guitars with top-notch woods for these sorts of events, hence the exceptional set of Madagascar and Adirondack. He also added fossilized Ivory bridge pins for even more tonal enhancement of this special guitar. After the show the guitar was owned by Bluegrass/Country guitarist Tony King for five year before the transfer to the current owner.
To the table comes a premium Adirondack Red Spruce top, lush figured and dark Madagascar Rosewood and Honduras Mahogany. The wood combination was originally conceived to highlight Madagascar Rosewood back & sides, which Dana was an early proponent of as a worthy Brazilian Rosewood substitute. ‘Madagascar Rosewood will probably get you closest to the sound of Brazilian but at a more affordable price. Madagascar Rosewood has much of the same rich overtone range as Brazilian, as well as a slightly “reverby” quality.’ Constructed with Hot Hide Glue and finished with Oil Varnish all the ingredients for a lively and bold dreadnought are there. Thus, this Bourgeois D Vintage Varnish is bold, impressive.
Playing this guitar is like picking on a pre-war D-28. It’s a fantastic reproduction of that classic dreadnought everyone is looking for. One welcome difference is the bolt-on neck which means no expensive neck resets down the road. This guitar is in excellent condition, with no dings or scratchers. Only some minor fret wear. This only two-owner guitar has been very well looked after. Listen to a sound sample here:
