Beautiful Santa Cruz D/PW Custom ‘Bryn Anthem’ build with 1800s ‘Bryn Anthem’ Indian Rosewood and Mastergrade German Spruce offering that balance, pure and refined tone with those crystalline mids and highs that we all love.
This Santa Cruz D/PW Custom ‘Bryn Anthem’ is Richard’s reimagination of the golden-era dreadnought, built with the kind of soul, craft, and tonal nuance that only Santa Cruz Guitar Company can deliver. Ligthweigt at 1.9 kg she is delightfully resonant and produces magic notes! Deeply appreciated for fingerstyle and contemporary flat picking work. By adhering to the principles of physics and the tried and true practices of lutherie, SCGC guarantees the most sophisticated instrument of its kind. Richard and his skilled team assure maximum sustain and complexity of overtones while maintaining consistency of balance and tone.
She is build with a set of wood that originated from a virgin wood that was cut in India in the 1800s. An English trader shipped the wood to the US to be used for building the Bryn Anthem Cathedral near Philadelphia, PA. Slow, steady, uniform growing wood is denser and more resonant than today’s fast-growing Indian Rosewood on plantations. The wood Richard was offered were left over planks of the construction and stored for more than 100 years in the church storage. While today’s Indian Rosewood offers a little slower response, warmth and more blended tone, this Rosewood is brighter, clearer and more articulate. In fact, this Rosewood only differs visually from Brazilian Rosewood. This century’s old wood is just as light and dense as Brazilian. With my eyes closed, it is impossible to separate from Brazilian Rosewood. Listen to Richard‘s story on this wood HERE.
We asked Richard to couple this unique tonewood with a set of tight grained Germand Spruce. German spruce has an even response across the frequency spectrum. Clear treble, strong but not boomy bass, and a sweet, singing midrange. The combination produces rich overtones and a “shimmer” that develops with age and playing. Also, she responds quickly to a light touch resulting in versatile dreadnought. The Mahogany neck has a slight V shape and plays like butter. To top that off, we added the classic Abalone Torch to the headstock. Not only a great companion for singer/songwrites, fast playing flatpickers and even fingerstylers but also a absolute beauty to look at. Sound impression coming soon.
