This Sandén R16 Irish Bouzouki / Octave Mandolin is an all Mahogany, hand-build instrument by Swedish master luthier Michael Sandén.
The Sandén R16, commonly used in Americana, Celtic and folk music, is the tenor instrument of the mandolin family. Its eight strings are in four pairs, with the strings in each pair being tuned in unison. Overall tuning is in fifths like a mandolin but beginning on bass G. With the pickup from LR Baggs Element Active pickup system the tone can be amplified through and amp or PA-system. Sofia Karlson is a huge fan of Sandén Guitars. Michael built her black Mandola, which is mostly tuned in Irish Tuning (G D A D) with a Nylon and steel string on the low G. This setup creates an ‘open atmosphere’ which makes it much easier to get a decent composition without too many complicated grips. ‘Music should be easy’. This fine instrument also works great in a duo with a 6-string guitar.
Michael Sandén has been building guitars for more than 40 years. His main goal is to make the best instrument possible, that will fit the musician. He travels all over the world to find wood that goes into a Sandén guitar. He only buys well dried wood and then dries it for at least another three years in his workshop in Simrishamn, Sweden. More on his background here. She delivers a sweet and solid tone. Her condition is excellent with no technical issues. Some minor play marks and tiny dings are visible but hard to find!
