Rare and amazing Martin DSS-2018 Custom Shop Slope Shoulder Dreadnought. She is a high-tech Martin made to showcase Martin’s technological breakthroughs and advances and at the same time cherish the classic line of the first Dreadnought.
This Custom Shop Martin DSS-2018 came to life based on the 2018 NAMM special edition theme: light weight and bold tone. A bold challenge for the Martin Custom Shop luthiers, which they won, of course! This baby delivers stellar results in both categories. Weighing 1.7 kg / 3 lbs. 26 oz. she is extremely light for a D-model. This weight is reached by using a titanium truss rod, carbon and titanium tuners, a composite carbon/VTS Adirondack bridge plate and head plate and Liquidmetal® bridge pins. These pins may look like bone but are a high-tech Zirconium compound and increase sustain, harmonics and volume by a few decibels. This is #27 of approximately 40 guitars that have been build.
The Genuine Mahogany is one of the nicest sets one can get, and the Adirondack top is nothing less. Constructed with hot Hide Glue, thus it may not surprise, here tone is out of this earth. She can do fast flat picking without ever losing a note on the comfortable modified low oval neck with the Performance Taper. Strumming with complex chords is easy. Big sounds with tight bass and an enormous dynamic range from quiet to loud without every losing control. You will love this guitar!
The DSS-2018 has the classic Slope Shoulder body shape that was first used in Martin’s D-111. Not only because it’s the original Dreadnought shape. The curves are extremely good-looking. Sounds wise there is no difference except for the volume. Martin invented the square shoulder because it is supposed to give more volume. Not really, but back in the days it was an issue. This guitar proves the opposite: loud! She can take extreme hard strumming without ever breaking up. The liquid metal bridge pins boost tone and sustain to a whole new level. Just listen to the sound samples. The Carbon Fiber tuners are a very neat stylish touch. Yes, they do reduce the weight and look great, and operate smooth and precise. Her former owner had the Carbon Fiber pickguard professionally removed and replaced with a classic black one. The retail price for this #27 of the limited NAMM-edition was 7.695 Euro. She is in excellent condition, some minor playmarks, some damage to the bridge pins and a new black pickguard. She travels in the pretty dark-red Martin TKL case.
