The Martin D-28 is the best known acoustic guitar in the world. This one is Reimagined version of that legendary Dreadnought with notable changes like the 1 3/4″ nut, forward-shifted non-scalloped braces and the high performance neck. A true modern classic is born.
The Martin D-28 can do a lot of different styles. It seemed to me that the changes would feel and perform similarly to the HD-28V, but with a rounder neck profile. After testing this fine example, this new she feels ‘beefier’ due to the wider neck width at the nut. The tone is certainly more robust than the ‘old’ model. Specs changes are the forward-shifted X bracing, which makes the top vibrate more freely and gives a tad more bass response. The neck has a 1-3/4″ wide fingerboard at the nut. That makes a hell of a difference compared to the ‘old’ 11/16″ neck. It not only feels great but play just as easy due to the slimmer ‘performance’ neck. Fortunately, they kept the diamond volute – which I always liked. Also, the excellent nickel Grover butterbean open back tuning machines are part of the series.
Other changes are cosmetic like the lacquer, the antique white binding and the faux tortoise pickguard. They add a nice patina to this baby. The changes are very similar to what Martin did with the D-18 back in 2012, making it closer in construction to the “Golden Era” line but with Standard series Sitka and Rosewood. You get not only a very well build instrument but also a very good and dynamic sounding guitar. She delivers a very deep and smooth tone, perfect for on-stage performances and studio work alike.
