She is build with a premium solid Adirondack Spruce top and Honduran Mahogany back and sides using hot hide glue. These two classic tonewoods combined with old school construction techniques provide a solid foundation for the stunning tone she delivers right out of the case. With only 1.8 kg / 3.97 lbs she is also a lightweight. Martin started designing the D-18 Authentic 1939 Aged acoustic guitar by taking a 1939 D-18 from their museum to the Smithsonian Institute and performed a CAT scan to examine and catalog every detail of that amazing instrument. From the premium tonewoods to the spot-on detailing to the historically accurate bracing and hide-glue construction, the Martin D-18 Authentic 1939 Aged is as perfect as it gets.
The neck of this 1939 Aged is spot on with its 1 11/16″ / 43 mm nut width and C-shaped barrel and heel neck shape. The barrel/heel name refers to prewar shaped necks that get thicker when getting closer to the body. This not only contributes to the sustain and tone, but also the feel of this ‘oldie’.
