The historically legendary “King of the Flat-tops” was released in 1937, set an unrivaled sonic standard at the time and was played by countless artists from Bob Dylan to Elvis to Pete Townshend on more albums than any other jumbo acoustic in history. It is rightly one of the most popular acoustic guitars in the world today… if only it wasn’t so unwieldy and clunky. Time to change that, Gibson’s luthiers in Montana probably thought, and in 2013 they brought all the charm and style of an SJ-200 into a handy living room format with this Limited Edition Gibson Custom Shop SJ-200 M Quilt. The result is a fantastic acoustic guitar model in an extremely handy parlor size, which comes very close to the typical sound of the SJ-200 thanks to a specially adapted X-bracing: powerfully balanced, projected and dynamic in tone.
Following the example of the SJ-200, the guitar comes with a finely resonating Sitka Spruce top and back and sides made of “AAA” Quilted Maple with a truly breathtaking grain. As if that wasn’t enough, Gibson really didn’t skimp on the extras on this model. The bound Rosewood fingerboard on the Rosewood-blocked flamed Maple neck comes with Abalone crown inlays and two Abalone decorative stripes are enthroned on the traditional Rosewood Moustache bridge. The marquetry stripe on the back with elaborately checkered real wood inlays and the painted “Flowers And Dots” pickguard lend the guitar a heart-warming attention to detail. And although the body is considerably smaller than that of the SJ-200, the SJ-200 M Quilt has a surprisingly powerful sound with the characteristic trebles and upright basses. The guitar has an incredible dynamic range and produces a convincing sound from delicate fingerpicking to passionate strumming without missing the “punch” when strumming.
