This early 1970 Gibson J-50 is a real find! She has a warm, rich bass, yet balanced trebles and detailed mids. This guitar is a great all-rounder. As you’d expect from an almost 50 year old guitar she has wonderful looking lacquer checkings. The neck feels great to play, with a very easy playing action, making it a very difficult guitar to put down.
Late 1968 Gibson changed the J-45/J-50 body shape from slope shouldered to square shouldered. Shortly after this change – December 1969 – Norlin acquired Gibson. Things would change, mostly not for the better. This beauty is one of last pre-Norlin J-50 guitars with the original Faux Tortoise pickguard and without the infamous volute, built in Gibson’s famous Kalamazoo factory. The J-50 is the classic example of the ‘workhorse’ guitar and one of Gibson’s most iconic models. This square shouldered dreadnought has the sweet honey coloured Spruce top and Honduras Mahogany back, sides and neck. She oozes character!
Her condition is very good considering her age. Various nicks, chips, dents & dings and surface scratches. Lots of weather checking & some finish wear. This one has seen stages and is used to makin’ music! The Kluson tuners and their buttons are a still very good. Overall the guitar has an ultra-cool, true vintage look to it with a nice patina. A full re-fret and bridge modification brought the playability and intonation to a professional level. The bridge was improved by luthier Hans Moust for better tone without losing the action adjustment option. Thus the original Rosewood insert was milled to hold a compensated bone nut. Brilliant solution. The result is a loud, great sounding and excellent playing instrument with that great sixties vintage Mahogany tone. Luthier Hans Moust knows how to make vintage guitar fun to play again. The neck is the well know, nicely rounded, wide profile Mahogany Gibson standard with cream side-dots and combined with a dark Madagascar Rosewood fingerboard with Pearl dot inlays. Frets are like new of course and show only very minimal wear. The truss rod and the adjustable bridge work properly. Check the sound sample by clicking the Soundcloud button below.
