The 2005 Eastman 814 is a professional grade F4-style hand build oval hole mandolin. Hand carved from solid woods. Solid Adirondack Spruce top, highly flamed Maple back, sides, and neck. Full binding on the body, a cast tailpiece, Ebony fingerboard and bridge.
This Eastman 814 is equipped with a new 34 mm neck instead of the original to offer better playability to players with larger hands. Known for having more treble attack and percussive “chop” than oval hole instruments, F-hole mandolins are the first choice in ensemble settings where volume competition can be an issue. Oval-hole mandolins possess throaty and vocal tonal characteristics that are wonderfully compatible with mandolin orchestras, and Celtic/folk music. These mandolins also produce a perceived ambient reverb, due to the oval-hole opening lying directly below the courses of strings.
