This mint Atkin J-45 is based on the classic Gibson models of the 1940s, known for their big open sound and warm, woody mid-range. The shorter 24.9-inch scale length is a big part of that, as is the classic slope-shouldered body shape. Allistair Atkin gave his ‘J-45’ a special spin. Having repaired many vintage examples over the years he learned what makes this incredible guitar tick.
A J-45 is popular among singer-songwriters, rock and country players just as you’d expect, but it’s grand tone is also favoured by folk, flatpicking and fingestyle guitarists. This J-45 Custom version is build with African Ovankol which is relative of Rosewood. This tonewood is really a great sounding and shares many of rosewood’s tonal properties, with a slightly fuller midrange and a very nice brightness tending to Maple. Combined with the aged Sitka Spruce top she produced a rich and warm sound with very good bass tone and nice mid and higs. The neck is relatively thin and easy to play in many styles. Fingerstyle players would want a bit wider neck but if you have smaller hands than you will love the sound and the playability. The guitar is equipped with one of the best pickup systems in the market: a Higlander IP-1. The Highlander IP-1 Acoustic Guitar Pickup system is used by thousands of musicians including many of the world’s top players. Highlander’s integrated pickup and preamp sets new standards in acoustic sound reproduction. The IP-1 is designed primarily for use in steel string or nylon string acoustic guitars and basses, but has founds its way into everything from resonator guitars to kotos. The pickup is a unique under-the-saddle coaxial transducer. It is very flexible and is ideal for any string spacing. It can be shortened using a sharp pair of wire cutters. The pickup is connected to a true Class A audiophile-quality preamplifier that is housed in a metal tube and mounted on the endpin jack. This preamp’s level of ultra-low noise and distortion has to “not” be heard to be believed.
