This Thomas SJ50 is build with premium quilted Sapele Mahogany and Moon Spruce from the dense Spruce forests in the Italian Latemar region. Latemar is a relatively small but well-known mountain group in the Dolomites in northern Italy. Here, the old master luthiers Stradivari and Guarnieri got their extraordinary top wood. The insane depth of the quilted Sapeli Mahogany is breathtaking. Sapeli Mahogany has a stronger high-end and the overtones are more complex, making the tone less compact than Genuine Mahogany. Moon Spruce features exceptional stiffness together with low density, the foundation of a great guitar sound.
The basic structure of all Thomas Guitars, are made by employing the old Spanish method of using a solera mold. This classic construction mold locks in the neck angle and sets the height of the bridge. The unfinished neck is glued with the intended angle to the soundboard. Then the bent sides are glued with individual wooden blocks to the top, and finally the back is fitted. This method has great advantages both tonally and structurally and form the foundation of a guitar set up that prevents fret buzz and string slapping.
The SJ fits in between the OM and the Jumbo sized guitars and is prized for its ability to blend warmly with diverse ensembles. She is a rhythm guitar of choice for many makers of hit recordings of the 50s and 60s. When it comes to fingerstyle solo performances particularly with lower open tunings or and flatpicking this Small Jumbo model will definitely be the right choice. On top of that the soundbox bevel lets you play for hours when sitting down in the studio or at home. Awesome guitar! Listen to a sound sample here:
